Midnight Cuvee Blend II is a solera method dark beer concoction of the highest order. This year we again blended five beers from five different barrels, an imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels, an imperial schwarzbier aged in port barrels, a black doppelbock aged in malbec barrels, a Russian imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels, and a small amount of vintage imperial stout in bourbon barrels from way back in 2015. As a sixth component of this blend, we worked in a portion of last year's Midnight Cuvee Blend I, a five beer five barrel mashup from our 2023 Chronicles program. Lastly, we blended in a splash of fresh milk stout and conditioned the entire concoction on toasted cocoa nibs before bottle conditioning. Deceivingly elegant for its blackout appearance, Blend II hits a uniquely fruity range from the high proportion of beer aged in port and malbec wine barrels, black currant, marionberry, and prune. It weaves together roasty malts, hefty oak, bitter cocoa, and wrinkles of licorice, anise, and espresso in a drawn out but near dry drinking journey. Like its predecessor, Midnight Cuvee Blend II is bottle conditioned to an excited degree, and will age splendidly in the cellar.
